This yellow lentil soup/dahl (also spelled daal or dal) is a great winter soup to warm you up. It is quick and easy to prepare as this recipe has very few ingredients. You can also make it with your leftover dahl. It has a mild taste and is very nutritious. It is liked by people of all ages.

I have used pressure cooker for this recipe. You may also use a sauce pan but you may need to cook it for a longer time until the lentils are well cooked.

Yellow Lentil Soup/Dahl with Dough Slices

Ingredients for soup/dahl:
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • Small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup of yellow lentil
  • Salt to taste
  • Chilli powder (optional)
  • 2 cups of water
Ingredients for dough:
  • 1 cup plain flour (you may also use wholemeal flour instead)
  • Water to knead dough
Preparing soup:
  • Heat oil in a pressure cooker.
  • Add cumin seeds and wait until it's darkened.
  • Add onion and fry until the onions are soft.
  • Add yellow lentils, salt, chilli and water. Stir well and cover the pressure cooker lid. Cook for about 8-10 minutes.
Preparing dough:
  • Mix water and flour. Knead until you get a soft dough.
  • Roll the dough and cut small slices out of it. You may cut into triangular or square shapes or any other shapes you like.
Final steps:
  • Once the soup is cooked, add the dough slices in the soup and cook it uncovered for another 5 minutes or until the dough slices are cooked. You may need to add hot water if your soup is too thick.
